Fairhaven man sentenced in New Bedford stabbing murder

Matthew Lariviere, formerly of Fairhaven, found guilty by jury of voluntary manslaughter in Fall River’s Bristol County Superior Court.

Convicted of 2019 killing of Robert Jones of New Bedford.

Lariviere, now 42, stabbed the unarmed Jones at least 137 times in a homeless encampment in the woods.

Prosecution asked for 17 to 20 years in state prison; defense counsel asked for eight to 12.

The judge on June 6 sentenced Lariviere to serve 12 to 15 years with credit for time served for being held in lockup since August 2019.

That means he’ll actually be in prison for the next eight to 11 years.

The jury declined to convict for first degree murder, which would have resulted in lifetime prison sentence with no chance of parole.
